i want to bring in now nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. pete, we're hearing a little bit more about who these people may be, that they may have recently come to the country. >> yeah, a little more i think is the operant term here. they're still waiting to positively identify them. these are not individuals that had wallets with their driver's licenses in them. so this is taking a while. but they believe that these two men came to the u.s. about a year ago and may have some overseas military experience. we're not positive where they came from. we don't have positive identification on them. i will say this, though. there's been a lot of speculation both on our facilities and elsewhere that one of these men, one of these suspects is a student that went missing from brown university in march. i'm told by several officials that that's not the case. that this is not one of those people. so let's just put that to rest too. i've heard other people talking about that tonight on our facilities and speculating about it. i'm told that is not the case.

they are telling nbc news that they have found numerous pieces of evidence that are being recovered, both from the watertown scene, which would include evidence of homemade explosives including pipe bombings. they found another pressure cooker, as well as more than 200 spent rounds. the cambridge site is now secure and is clear. they are saying they did not have to detonate that explosive device that they had alluded to earlier in the day. they made a big point of telling the press earlier that they were going to have to detonate an explosive device and not to misinterpret what that was. it that are now saying they did not have to do that. they thought that a car in that particular area of cambridge might have had an explosive in it, but it did not. and they did not want to comment any further on what they found there. so, we're beginning to see some of the evidence, or hear about some of the evidence that the authorities are found. and they've also found as many as seven improvilzed explosive devices between the watertown site and the cambridge site. maria and melissa, back to you.

joining us now, nbc news white house correspondent kristin welker. how did the president find out about the capture? >> reporter: rachel, i can tell you according to administration sources, fbi director robert mueller made the president aware of tonight's arrest. this is the phone call that he has been hoping to get all day and really all week, if you think about it. robert mueller has been keeping the president up to date not only through the day briefing him, but really briefing him the past several days during this developing story. the president also held a briefing with his entire national security team early this morning, rachel, he's continued to monitor the swaying. we haven't really heard from anyone from the white house today on camera. that is by design. they didn't want to speak about it because it was evolving, there were so many unknowns. before a top official said something on the record, they wanted to be sure they understood exactly what was happening. i can give you a sense of what was going on behind the scenes, rachel. administrat

pete, thanks so much for being on top of all of this for everyone here at nbc news. nbc's katie tour is in watertown. katie, do you want to describe the scene there in watertown, which has been really ground zero of the search? >> certainly. i had a news conference a little while ago. they said they've been able to comb about 60 to 70% of this town. they've been knocking on doors, every door for about 12 hours now, we are getting the military helicopters circling once again. they left for a little while. some of them have landed. so i wonder if this guy will be landing as well. the police helicopter stopped circling. for the most part it's calmed down significantly here in the past few hours. we have seen police cruisers, military vehicles go back and forth. there was a flurry of activity a few hours ago. but in the past two, two and a half hours, it has significantly calmed down. they have been knocking on doors as i've said for 12 hours, trying to comb this entire neighborhood for dzhokah tsarnaev, to see where he could possibly be hiding, if he is here. i can tell
